Hakuba Goryu is more than just a winter ski resort.  During the summer, Goryu is an outdoor enthusiast’s playground with pleasant walks and beautiful views.  Whether you’re looking to hike Goryu Dake, or to gaze at the night sky away from city lights, Hakuba Goryu Resort has it all. Located towards the south end of Hakuba, Goryu is the place to be in summer!

Goryu Flower Gardens

Toomi Slope Garden

Hakuba Goryu summer boasts two beautiful alpine flower gardens.   The garden at the bottom of the Toomi slope is a relaxing getaway with gently sloping pathways and an ambling stream.  Take a leisurely stroll amidst blooming flowers and be sure to capture that insta moment while you ring the Happiness Bell.

Hakuba Goryu Alpine Botanical Garden

Found on the upper slopes of Goryu, this true alpine garden offers majestic views of the Northern Alps and over 300 species of alpine plants. Blooming from early summer to autumn, the garden, at an elevation of 1,515m, is easily accessible from the top of the Goryu Gondola.  Keep your eyes open for the famous Himalayan blue poppies, and Edelweis as you hunt for your next @flowersofinsta post.  After touring the garden you can stop and have a bite to eat at the Alps 360 restaurant or head down to the bottom of the Gondola to Escal Plaza for more dining options.

Hiking Goryu Dake

Hiking season in Hakuba begins mid to late spring with the mountain huts usually opening in mid-July.  Goryu Dake (Goryu Peak) can be reached from both the top of Happo & Goryu, and is about a 6-hour hike to the peak from either start point.  Goryu Sansou (Goryu Mt. Hut) is located an hour from the peak in the saddle between Mt. Goryu and Mt. Shiratake and offers both food and lodging for hikers. Read our article about hiking Hakuba to find out more about other hikes in the area.

Paragliding at Goryu

If you’ve always wanted to fly, Hakuba Goryu summer has an adventure for you.  There is no better way to see the Hakuba Valley than by soaring through the skies like a bird above it.  Hakuba Paratopia is Goryu’s own paragliding school.  They offer lessons, gear rental, and tandem flights, for anyone looking to either learn the sport or just looking for their first experience.  Their office is located in the Toomi Gondola building, but we recommend booking in advance by calling the number on their site (Japanese Only).

Hakuba Goryu Stargazing

Spend an evening underneath the stars taking in the milky way, or watching the Perseid Meteor show from the top of Goryu Resort.  During the Hakuba Goryu summer, the resort opens the gondola at night giving you access to the upper mountain for stargazing.  Above the valley floor far from the lights of the city, you will have spectacular views of the cosmos above.  If you are new to stargazing and looking to learn or an experienced pro looking to meet fellow astronomers, Goryu runs summer-guided stargazing events.  Spend the night or just a couple of hours on the mountain and experience the beauty of the night sky in Hakuba.  Be sure to check out our Events page for upcoming Hakuba Stargazing Events and more.

Hakuba Goryu Accommodation

There is limited on-hill accommodation at Hakuba Goryu. During the summer many of the winter hotels are not open.  The area takes on a secluded quiet feel that many guests enjoy.  Great deals can be found booking in the area but we do recommend having a car to get around.  For restaurants, there are a few that are open during the summer, but with limited options, we would recommend heading to Echoland or towards the Hakuba train station.  During the summer highway, 148 (the main road in Hakuba) has a large number of restaurants available.
